Positions
In cheerleading, there are groups called stunts. In every stunt group, there are 4 people. There is a flyer, 2 bases, and a back spot. The flyer is the individual that gets thrown or pushed up into the air. A flyers job is to be tight when in the air and focused on what he or she is doing. Now there are 2 bases. There's a right base and a left base. The bases are the ones who are most responsible for getting the flyer up and down. They usually hold on to the flyers feet in a specific way depending on the stunt. It's important for bases to have upper body strength so they can hold the flyer. And the back spot is the one that usually starts the stunt. They are also responsible for getting the flyer up.
How to Start a Stunt:
As you can see in the picture above, the girls are in their positions for the stunt. They are already up in the air. Now to start a stunt, you're in the positions that the girls are in the photo, but you start on the ground. The flyer will hold on to the bases shoulders, the bases will bend their knees a little and hold out their hands putting one hand on top of the other, and the back spot will hold on to the flyers waist. Then, the back spot will usually call out, "Ready? 1-2," and then the flyer jumps up into the bases hands, and the bases lift their hands up, and the back spot then grabs the flyers ankles or legs. And that's how you do a stunt.
